Minnesota
Minnesota is ranked in the top five states for the number of inventor patents. The Mayo Clinic, one of the largest non-profit, academic health systems in the U.S., is state-based and one of the largest employers there. The two major industries are retail and manufacturing. Minnesota is home to 500 Fortune companies, including Target, General Mills, 3M as well as United Health Group. The University of Minnesota is not just the state’s largest college, but the United States’ sixth largest campus. Minnesota schools stay true to federal guidelines such as No Child Left Behind.
Kansas
Kansas is the country’s top wheat producer and ranks seventh nationally in overall agricultural production. The $20 billion agricultural industry consists mainly of family farms and ranches. Manufacturing, bioscience, wind energy, professional services, renewable fuels, and bioenergy are also important industries. Mineral production occurs all over the state, primarily petroleum and natural gas, accompanied by helium, limestone, and salt. Kansas City is home to many of the state’s top employers, namely Garmin and Hallmark. Also, 37 public institutions are governed or supervised by the Kansas Board of Regents.
