The Maine Department of Education (DOE) manages state-run public education. The DOE also provides state leaders with suggestions on school funding and policies. Private schools, however, are less common than public schools.

Pennsylvania, known in history for its coal stores and steel production, is now known as the world’s food snack capital: its annual snack and food sales exceed $5.1 billion. The state is also known for agriculture, especially the annual production of 425 million pounds of mushrooms. There are 187 colleges and universities in the commonwealth, including the University of Pennsylvania and Penn State, both among the 10 largest employers in the state. The U.S. Census Bureau reported in 2009 that 87.9% of Pennsylvanians aged 25 or over had graduated from high school or higher.
