Her Humble Beginnings
Betty Brosmer was born to Andy and Vendita Brosmer on August 2, 1935. Even though she was born in Pasadena, she grew up in Los Angeles instead. When she was a teen, she developed an interest in weight training and bodybuilding. Her father was a big sports fan and noticed that she excelled in youth athletics. Apparently, she was “somewhat of a tomboy.” At the age of 13, she launched her modeling career by appearing in the 1948 Sears & Roebuck catalog. The year after that, her aunt brought her to New York City to have professional photographs taken for her portfolio.
Making It Big In New York
In 1950, Betty Brosmer went to New York City once more after her aunt encouraged her to do so. She made the decision to reside in the city. She attended George Washington High School and built up a photographic portfolio. In the following four years, she often received job offers to model for book covers and magazines even though she was only a teen. This meant that she edged out older competitors! Her most notable work in this period included spreads in publications such as Photo, Modern Man, Picture Show, and People Today. Later on, the model shared, “When I was 15, I was made up to look like I was about 25.”
