Baxter apparently started her career as an actress throughout 1972 also with a role in Bridget Loves Bernie’s CBS sitcom. Although the show was short, which lasted one season, she indeed married David Birney, her co-star in the show. In 1974 the couple tied the know but in 1989 they filed for divorce. Baxter did appear in episodes of The Young Lawyers, The Doris Day Show, and The Partridge Family during the early days of her professional life. She is best known for playing a role in the family ties of NBC.

Starting from 1982 to 1989, Baxter presented Elyse Keaton on Family Ties. Before Family Ties, Baxter won two Primetime Emmy nominations for Nancy Lawrence Maitland’s role in Family. Also in the 1990s and 2000s, Baxter appeared in numerous films such as One More Mountain, soap operas like The Young and the Restless, sitcoms like Spin City, and reality like Hell’s Kitchen all over the place. Throughout 2009, Baxter went public as a lesbian and married Nancy Locke in 2013.
