The Cleopatra Costume In Cleopatra

It is truly upsetting that most of the Cleopatra film has been lost to time. Before a surviving copy burned down, the movie was deemed too hot. You see, Theda Bara wore a lot of very racy costumes in the movie. In fact, the Hays Code deemed the film “obscene” for that reason. There are churches that found copies of it, only to destroy them. What we know is that the actress donned a snake-like metal bikini for the film. This sort of outfit would still be considered risqué even in this day and age. There is a list of cuts that they had to make that continue to survive. Among other things, there are references to cutting out “snake breast plates” and an “objectionable costume” from the film.

No, Ben Affleck did not make it to the list because his red Daredevil leather suit revealed too much. Instead, it is on the list because it was just plain awful. It seemed way too tight for any of us, much less a superhero. The costume came with an S&M vibe. This just goes to show that some things are not meant to be adapted too closely. The actor was not a fan of it either. In 2006, he told Hollywoodland reporters, “By playing a superhero in Daredevil, I have inoculated myself from ever playing another superhero. Wearing a costume was a source of humiliation for me and something I wouldn’t want to do again soon.” Despite what he said, he went on to bring Batman to life in 2016.
