Versace was a mutual friend of Elton and Diana’s, and he had been involved in the incident that had caused the couple’s estrangement. Unfortunately, on July 15, 1997, serial killer Andrew Cunanan murdered the fashion designer outside his mansion. In what would turn out to be one of her final public appearances, Diana attended Versace’s funeral alongside Elton John.

Meanwhile, Elton shared his opinions on Diana’s burial in Me, and some of his remarks were damning. “William and Harry looked completely shell-shocked,” he wrote of his late friend’s children. “They were 15 and 12, and I thought the way they were treated that day was absolutely inhuman. They were forced to walk through the streets of London behind their mother’s coffin, told to show no emotion and look straight ahead.”
