Brooke Yost was a nine-year-old girl who encountered a state trooper called Chad Savannah in 2017. It was an experience that she will remember for the rest of her life. As soon as she got home, she wrote a letter to the police department to share what he did. When the patrol commander received the letter, he was shocked by what it said. What did the little girl have to say about the police officer to make his superior act like that? It was clear that the department had to get in touch with her parents ASAP.
Going To The Store To Buy Donut Holes
It took place on August 29, 2017. When the story happened, Brooke Yost was thinking of donut holes the entire day. This was the reason she decided to buy some from the Sheetz gas station between Meridian Road and Route 68. While she was inside the store, a stranger changed her life forever!
The Little Girl Was Backed Into A Corner
The young girl lived with her family in Butler, Pennsylvania. She was born to Beth and Dave and had sisters called Holly and Rylee. Her parents made sure to teach the kids to be good and to behave. However, little Brooke found herself in a difficult situation. For a brief moment, she wondered if she should break the law to get out of this mess. What did she do?
Wanted To Satiate Her Cravings
She could feel her mouth water as she inspected the box of donut holes in her hand. In fact, she was wondering if she could open the box and eat one to get her fix even before paying for it. However, her parents instilled good manners in her! Sadly, there was one more thing about to get in her way…
Her Mom Was Not There To Help Her
It was only when she reached the counter that she realized that she did not have enough money on her. On any other day, this would not have been an issue. After all, her mom could simply give her more to pay for it all. However, she could not find her mom after taking a look around.
Panic Was Bubbling In Her Stomach
Her mom came with her to the store but stayed in the vehicle. This put the little girl in quite a dilemma. She wanted the donut holes very badly. Brooke did not know what to do and began to panic!
Overwhelmed With The Feeling Of Fear
“I was standing in line, and I didn’t have enough money, and I’m like, frozen,” she told the Butler Eagle during an interview in December 2017. She added, “I didn’t know what to do.” What made it worse was that a cop had been standing right behind her!
A Cop Was Standing Right Behind Her
For a second, she looked back to stare at the tall officer. He only looked back at her in confusion. Chad Savannah had been on the Pennsylvania State Force long enough to figure out when anything felt wrong. At that moment, his senses told him that he had to do something about it.
He Needed To Lend Her A Hand
As soon as he realized what was going on, he did what any good cop would do. Savannah came to her rescue! However, he needed to act right away since the line was getting longer. He did not want anyone to get mad at Brooke for holding up the queue. However, how could he help her in a situation like this?
Negotiating For The Poor Little Girl
One option was to go out to her mother and ask her to give Brooke money to buy the donut holes. The police officer, however, did not do this. No, he decided to put his negotiation skills to good use and talked to the clerk about the issue.
Immediately Ran Out Of The Store
“I asked the clerk if she’d put the bill with my stuff, and I would take care of it,” he informed KDKA. It makes sense that he assumed Brooke would turn around to thank him for this act of kindness. You can imagine his shock when she ended up running out of the store!
Realizing Her Big Mistake Too Late
“I paid for the donuts, and she ran out. It was almost like she’d robbed the place, it was that quick,” the cop shared his story. It was already too late when Brooke realized that she made a mistake.
She Failed To Give Him Her Money
Brooke was already at the car with the donut holes when her mistake dawned on her. She failed to give the officer the money that she had on her! This made her feel sad, but the cop was no longer there. She thought that this was the end of it. However, she eventually realized that there was something she could do to make it up to him!
She Wrote To The Police Department
Savannah decided to go back to his duties but did not forget about the little girl at the store. When Brooke got home, she started to craft a letter to the police department! She wanted to pay him back.
The Cops Were Speechless After Reading It
The police department received the letter. It ended up moving the patrol commander in charge of Savannah! Here was what the note said: “My name is Brooke and I’m nine years old. I was at Sheetz and didn’t have enough money. A nice police officer behind me kindly paid for my item. I thanked him but felt bad because I didn’t offer him the money I had.”
What She Wants To Do With The Money
Aside from this sweet note, there was something else enclosed with the letter. She added cash and what she wanted them to do with the money. “I am donating this money,” Brooke said in the letter. “I want to thank this officer again. Stay safe. Brooke.” Let us find out how the other police officers reacted to this.
Time To Pay It Forward
“A lot of us are parents,” Lieutenant Dan Hines shared with KDKA. “We hope that our own children have these traits and characteristics.” All of the cops in the police station felt moved by this letter! In the end, they agreed to pay it forward. It was the least that they could do for her!
Gifts In Exchange For Her Kindness
A number of the police officers raised $50 for Brooke and got her a Toys ‘R’ Us voucher. After that, they went to her home to give her the gifts and told her to buy herself something nice. However, the little girl only got to keep part of it…
She Is A Selfless And Kind Little Girl
She treated the family to a meal using the $50 from the police officers. Using the gift card, she decided to buy items that she can donate to the yearly Toys for Tots drive held by the Marine Corps.
A Chance Encounter Between Her Mom And An Officer
It has been some time since then. Her mother had been busy working her waitressing job when she spotted a familiar man. She recognized Lieutenant Hines and walked over to the cop. After that, she greeted the officer and his family.
He Had Nothing But Good Words For Her
When he spoke to the Butler Eagle, Hines shared, “She said, ‘Lt. Hines? I’m Brooke’s mother.’” All of a sudden, he began to tell her that she should be proud of raising someone like Brooke.
Brooke Got Her Work Ethics From Her Parents
Beth Yost then informed the police officer that she and her spouse worked hard to support the family. Their habits probably rubbed off on the kids! When Hines heard this, he invited Brooke and the family to drop by the station for a visit.
Desire To Reward The Little Girl Some More
The KDKA report also covered how a commanding officer by the name of Steve Ignataz told the rest of the cops, “We need to do something nice for this young lady.” They did this and more! The cops toured her around the police station and showed her around. However, they did not feel satisfied by only giving this extraordinary little girl a tour.
Asking Her To Make A Promise
They allowed Brooke to sit in a patrol car as well! On top of this, they gave the little girl even more gifts. They were afraid that she would just donate them, which was why they asked her to promise to keep a couple of the toys.
Brooke Is A Model Citizen At Such A Young Age
It is amazing to hear that Brooke Yost did the right thing. However, her parents wanted everyone to know that she acted of her own volition. She was not forced to do anything at all. Wouldn’t it be nice if more people were like her? We are sure that everyone is going to benefit if we can all be kinder to one another. Trust us, it is going to do wonders for every single one of us.
