Normally, he would not be this surprised to bump into a rock while he was digging. However, he was aware that the soy field had moist and soft soil. There was no reason for a hard object to be there. James did not know what it could be, so he went down to check it out and see what it was. As he started to feel around this object, he saw that it smooth and hard. However, it was impossible for it to be a rock.

This was the first time he ever saw anything like this, so he was intrigued. In the beginning, he assumed that it was a rib bone. However, he realized that it was far too big to be something from the animals that he saw in the area.
