A Lean Beauty – Margaret Gorman
In 1921, Margaret Gorman was crowned Miss America at the age of 16. Her athletic ability, outgoing personality, and past accomplishments had earned her the Miss District of Columbia title before she became the first ever Miss America. Her fans believed that the beauty queen’s body type was the ideal of that decade. You can see that this was very different from the Gibson Girls’ curviness from the previous era. At that time, people admired women who had lean bodies!
1930s – The Soft Siren
While the Roaring Twenties was fun and iconic, the era wasn’t around forever. The stock market crashed and the boxy flapper dresses also fell off the radar. In the ‘30s, more fitted dresses were the clothing of choice of women. These dresses hugged the curves of women’s body better. If this had happened a few years earlier, it would have been quite a faux pas! As they say, “Times do change for a lady of fashion.”
