A Gibson Girl – Camille Clifford

Speaking of the Gibson Girl, the Belgian-born stage actress Camille Clifford was considered to be a real-life version. She actually joined a contest which was aimed at finding a woman who resembled a Charles Gibson drawing and she won in the end! The judges thought that among the candidates, Clifford was the one who looked like the illustrations the most. She had an hourglass figure and towering coiffure, both of which were defining elements of the Gibson Girl style.

1920s – The Flapper

The Gibson Girl and the It-girl of the roaring ‘20s did not really have much in common. The flapper sported short hair and a corset was not part of her wardrobe. The hourglass figure and the dramatic updo were no longer hip. When the 19th Amendment was ratified, women were finally granted the right to vote, after nearly a century of protesting and fighting for this right! After this political upheaval, fashion changed.
