When Clare came to the Methodist Church where the prom was taking place, she was immediately approached by someone who commented on her inappropriate dress. Although she checked her dress many times before entering the door, she was still pulled aside by someone. So she simply asked someone to repeat to her what the rule was.

Ann Duncan, the organizer who spoke to Clare, told her she needed to follow the rules set out and comply with the fingertip rule. Clare tried to tell her that the dress actually complies with the rule but that her legs are long, so the dress looks much shorter on someone else than it would.
