New Jersey
New Jersey is home to over 5,000 IT firms and several pharmaceutical and biotech businesses. Among its biggest employers are Verizon, Johnson & Johnson, and Merck. The state also has a large tourism industry, centered along its Atlantic coast. New Jersey was the only colony establishing two colleges in colonial times: Princeton, chartered as New Jersey College in 1746, and Rutgers, chartered as Queen’s College in 1766. Only nine were founded in the pre-American Revolution colonies.
Vermont
Vermont may have the smallest economy, but it’s still the No.1 producer of maple syrups. Also known for its dairy products, especially cheese and other agricultural goods. The state promotes its indigenous products, including Ben & Jerry’s Ice Cream and Green Mountain Coffee Roasters. With Iowa, Hawaii, New Hampshire, and North Dakota, Vermont has the country’s lowest unemployment rate. The state’s largest higher education institution is Burlington’s Vermont University, and the medical center is the state’s top employer.
