Lewis Powell, a 21-year-old man who was involved in a larger plot that included the assassination of Abraham Lincoln, was arrested on April 17, 1865, in Washington, D.C. for the attempted murder of Secretary of State William H. Seward. Powell was imprisoned in a brig on a U.S. Navy vessel.
